PowerMom is a Community, for a Community.

We are researchers dedicated to the health of all pregnant people and their babies — during pregnancy and in the postpartum period.

As part of the Scripps Research Digital Trials Center, PowerMom was born out of a long-time commitment from one of the nation’s leading non-profit research institutions to transform medical research through digital data. We are committed to uncovering patterns in healthy pregnancies and discovering answers to questions moms (and soon-to-be-moms) have about their bodies and their growing babies. With your help, we’ll be able to answer important questions about what makes a healthy pregnancy for the diverse pregnant population in an effort to ensure the health and wellbeing of all moms and babies for generations to come.

Our committed participant partners are the lifeblood of PowerMom. We hope you’ll join us in this monumental effort.

Learn about our two PowerMom sub-studies:

PowerMom Connect: a study on postpartum maternal mental health
PowerMom FIRST: a study on systemic racism and maternal health outcomes

We have completed enrollment for these sub-studies. Thank you for your interest.

Why the Research Matters

Dr. Tolúwalàṣé (Laṣé) Ajayi, MD, FAAP
Lead Researcher, PowerMom

“In general, pregnant people are left out of clinical research because we’re seen as a vulnerable population. As a result, we don’t get to know a lot of things about our body and what’s happening to us.”

Your Data Helps Us Understand

By involving pregnant people from diverse communities throughout the United States, we aim to help achieve equity in maternity care — for ALL pregnant people. Your data helps us understand how healthcare access in different parts of the country influences health outcomes, what pre-existing conditions lead to early birth, and how support during pregnancy influences mood disorders and postpartum depression across a diverse population. Here’s a look at the data we’ve collected so far:

How Do I Get Started?

Find the answers to the most common questions about the study below. If you need more information, please contact us.

Why should I participate?

By participating in PowerMom, you will be joining a community designed to inform critical research on healthy pregnancy for all. The valuable information you contribute will add to our robust collection of data, allowing researchers to uncover patterns of maternity health and make discoveries that could improve pregnancy outcomes for generations to come. Your data will be viewable to you in real-time, allowing you access to health information and comparative insights throughout your pregnancy. PowerMom puts the power of knowledge right at your fingertips!

What will I receive in return?

When you contribute your data to PowerMom, you will receive data in return. This is what makes PowerMom such a powerful and unique partnership. Your personalized return of information puts the power of knowledge in your hands. You will continue to receive important updates and insights as you progress through the study and through your pregnancy – receiving valuable information that will empower you with answers to questions you have about the health of you and your baby.

What information will you collect from me?

As a partner with us in this valuable research effort, you will primarily be answering a variety of surveys throughout the study period – which will run for the duration of your pregnancy and eight weeks postpartum. You will answer questions via the PowerMom app and provide data that includes information like fitness activity (steps, for example), heart rate and sleep. Additionally, you may be able to share your Electronic Medical Record (EMR), if available.

How do I join?

To get started, simply download the MyDataHelps™ app on your smartphone and select the PowerMom study. Once you create an account, you will answer some screening questions, go through the informed consent, and easily connect your wearable device. After that, you’re good to go.
